The Ghost of Tom Joad

The song by Bruce Springsteen “Ghost of Tom Joad” and the cover by Rage Against the Machine have two completely different sounds. The lyrics of the songs are the same, but the way they are presented changes their meaning to the listeners. Bruce Springsteen version has a very soft sound and is more comforting. Springsteen seems as if he is sugar coating the issue that he is singing about. The intended audience of his version is an older generation. He persuades the target audience with his tone and the use of the harmonica and guitar. Springsteen’s version also sounds bluesier.  Rage Against the Machines version of “Ghost of Tom Joad” has a more burst of emotion.  The song seems more serious when performed by Rage Against the Machine.  The target audience is a younger generation. They persuade their audience with a loud bass, electric guitar and drums.
The context of the songs is the same. The lyrics are describing the hard conditions, issues and times of the 1990’s for some Americans. The tone in Springsteen song is sad. If this song were a texture it would have a cotton-fabric feel. Even though Springsteen’s song has a sad tone, it sounds more cheerful than Rage Against the Machine’s cover. The cover’s version tone is serious and slightly angered. The voice in the song is deeper and harsh. If the song were a texture it would have denim and cement feel.
I think that the lyrics fit well with Rage Against the machines versions better than Bruce Springsteen’s original song.  The context of the lyrics has a better feel with a more serious and darker tone. Rage Against the Machine gives the lyrics the emotion they need to portray the message.  Springsteen’s song makes the audience feel mournful and gloomy about the situation. The Rage Against the Machines version persuades the reader to feel anger and awareness of the issue. It is amazing to see how different tones and sounds can change what lyrics mean to the listener.
