The article by Alexander Nehamas poses the issue of video games that expose violence and sex to the viewers. With video games being mass produce, they could cause the gamers to act out what they see in the game. The fear is that there is a strong correlation between video games and violence. Nehamas mentioned that Plato had the similar problem in his era. Plato was not satisfied with the obscene language that the Greek poets were using. Plato took it upon himself to censor what was written in the Greek stories because of the poetry’s “vulgar and repulsive” subjects.
I can definitely see the similarities between the two writings. Berger stressed the issue of mystification with paintings and pictures. Berger said that the mass production of paintings changed their meanings. The mass manufacturing of pieces make the time era distant from the viewers of today. Nehamas used the example of Plato and the video games. The same matter was presented in both examples. The works of art were considered vulgar and fused with sex and violence. When massed produced their true meaning was lost. Berger and Nehamas, both showed interesting examples of how an original piece of work can have its significance altered when mass produced.
In my opinion I prefer to Nehamas’ article over Berger’s article. Nehamas article was very clear and straight to the point. Berger’s essay seemed to be hard to understand. It was almost like I had to read between the lines to find his point. In all, I believe that the two writings make a great point of exposing the past culture to modern culture. Art changes with the change of every generation. The meaning of Picasso’s work to a group of men in his era is different from a group of teenagers in the twenty first century.
