Ilmuwan dari Inggris menemukan jenis makhluk hidup mikroskopis serupa jamur. Meski mirip, ilmuwan mengatakan bahwa makhluk hidup tersebut bisa jadi merupakan kingdom makhluk hidup baru, di luar jamur atau fungi, mikroba, tumbuhan, dan hewan.

Para ilmuwan memberi nama cryptomycota pada makhluk hidup yang diduga kingdom baru itu, yang artinya "yang tersembunyi dari kingdom fungi". Diketahui, cryptomycota memiliki tiga fase hidup, yaitu sebagai parasit alga, organisme mandiri yang mencari makanan, dan masa dormansi.
